God Showed Up

In the wake of the recent school shooting in Newton, Connecticut I have heard reports from people blaming God for what took place.  “Why did God allow this to happen?”  “Where was God and why did He not do anything?”

The question I have is why is it when something bad happens the first reaction is to blame God?  Why do people not blame the devil for the evil that goes on in our world?  The Governor of Connecticut, Dan Malloy, got it right when he said “evil has visited this community.”  I am confident that it was not the Holy Spirit living in and driving the actions of Adam Lanza on December 14, 2012, and I am equally confident that God showed up that tragic day.

Upon hearing gun shots, 1st Grade teacher, Victoria Soto (27), quickly hid her students in the closet and remained in the room.  When the shooter approached Victoria asking where her students were she responded by telling “him they were down in the gym.”  Victoria was shot and killed by the gunman before he left the room not knowing the students were hidden.  God showed up!

You see God showed up in a young 27 year old woman who gave her own life to save the lives of those she loved.  Jesus said in John 15:13, “greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” God showed up in the love that Victoria had for her students.  God showed up in the value she placed on the children she loved to teach.  Victoria taught her students something on December 14th they will never forget.  She taught them how to love as Christ loves.

There is no doubt that evil violent events took place that day, but even so God showed up.  I have doubt in my mind that if we could here all the stories being told about what happened that day we would hear many more stories like Victoria’s where God showed up.
